Can Changing Your Mind Change Your Life?

I think of freedom as the ability to choose one's own direction, then moving toward the goals in that direction - not necessarily the ones that other people think are okay. This idea is what brought me to the question - "Can changing your mind change your life?"

My answer - you bet!

I see many people that move along in life sort of "floating" in the direction that they believe will receive approval and because of this fail to look toward what they believe is truly right for them.

Here's a sort of fun example that comes to mind of how someone can change their mind and experience the freedom that goes along with it: If you've ever seen the movie "Singles" - there is a scene in the movie where Bridget Fonda is in an elevator with her rocker boyfriend that she adores, but he could really care less whether she was around or not. She looks at him and realizes that she doesn't have to dote on him, and in fact doesn't want to anymore. She says to herself, "Hey, I could just break up with him!" Next thing you see her dancing around her house happy as a clam and free as a bird.

Ha! I love that.

A couple of years ago I made a major change in life, it was risky. I quit my job and started my own business doing something I have always wanted to do - on my own. Even though financially it didn't look like it made sense, I just knew it would work, and that it was right. I kept my end-goal in mind at all times, and kept moving toward it. You know what? It worked - and I'm much happier than I would have been if I had been worried about what other people thought.

But the reason I wrote this post is not to talk about what I've done - it's to bring up this idea of people doing what they want in life, and being who they want to be. It sometimes takes some guts, but it can be done.

Is there something that you've always wanted to do but never did? Perhaps play a guitar or sing in front of an audience? Do you have ideas that you believe could help other people but they've never been expressed? Have you always wanted to be a writer? An artist? An athlete?

Don't get me wrong - other people's ideas are fine. It's just that those ideas are theirs, and are fitting for them, but don't necessarily apply to everyone. Maybe they fit me, maybe they don't - but that's up to me.

What does changing ones mind have to do with all of this? OK - if someone is set on the fact that others' ideas are more important than their own, then that person changes their mind and starts to believe in themselves and their own ideas... Well - isn't that freedom?

Can changing your mind change your life? Think about it. :D
